College Goal Sunday A statewide volunteer initiative that provides free information and assistance to students and families applying for financial aid to complete a post secondary education. The ULDSEM with host its next College Goal Sunday event on February 12, 2012, and will bring together financial aid professionals from colleges and universities, as well as, volunteers to assist college-bound students and their families with completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). In February 2011, more than fifty (50) perspective college bound freshmen were assisted with completing the FAFSA application, making their dreams of post secondary education a reality. In the years to come, we look to double and keep growing the number of students served on College Goal Sundays. Do the Right Thing An annual recognition held in December in collaboration with our Guild Gala, a volunteer led auxiliary of the ULDSEM. This is a celebration to recognize positive youth activities and behaviors in the following categories: Athletics • Academics • Citizenship • Community Service • Beating the Odds Leadership • Technology • Performing Arts Black History Celebration During the month of February the College Club/Project Ready program &the Guild annually host a celebration of Black History. These celebrations seek to understand and celebrate history through the eyes of our youth participants. Future Warrior Youth Dialogue and Salute to "Distinguished Warriors" Dinner An activity held the day before our “Distinguished Warrior Dinner”. This is an inter-generational symposium that provides opportunities for high school students to interact with our honorees who are ages 65 years and older. (Distinguished Warriors are individuals who have served the community unselfishly in the areas of human and civil rights) The Distinguished Warriors share their experiences and share their wisdom and advice to help students achieve success, as well as, learn how they can serve and make an impact in the community. National Urban League’s Youth Leadership Summit A significant culminating experience for youth who participate in ULDSEM programs. Students in the 9th through 11th grades compete for an opportunity to represent the ULDSEM at this positive youth development and leadership activity. Since 1989, the Youth Leadership Summit have been held simultaneously with the annual National Urban League Conferences and are designed to reflect the positive characteristics of youth while providing them opportunities for personal and leadership development.
